- Week 1 consists of self guided online learning that you complete at a time that suits you
- 1 day of inhouse practical training

What does the programme cover?
- This programme provides learners with the knowledge and practical skills required to inspect, test, and record the condition of portable electrical appliances in line with current safety requirements and good practice.
Learners will develop an understanding of:
- The principles of electrical safety
- Hazards associated with portable electrical equipment
- Legal responsibilities relating to inspection, maintenance, and safe use of appliances
- The difference between user checks, visual inspections, and formal combined inspection and testing
- Appliance classes and types, including Class I, Class II, and IEC leads
- Common faults found in plugs, cables, casings, and connections
- The correct use of Portable Appliance Testing equipment
- How to interpret and record test results
- How to identify whether an appliance is safe to return to service, requires repair, or should be removed from use
Practical training will include:
- Safe isolation procedures
- Visual inspection of portable appliances
- Checking plugs, fuses, cables, and terminations
- Carrying out earth continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, and functional checks where appropriate
- Testing extension leads and detachable power leads
- Labelling appliances and maintaining accurate records
- Recognising damaged or unsuitable equipment
- Understanding the limitations of testing and when equipment should be referred for repair or replacement
Appliances and equipment covered may include:
- Kettles
- Toasters
- Microwaves
- Vacuum cleaners
- Extension leads
- Computer equipment
- Monitors
- Printers
- Chargers
- Power tools
- other common workplace and domestic portable electrical equipment
Learners will also gain an understanding of:
- The importance of routine inspection and maintenance
- The role of competent persons in PAT testing
- Risk-based approaches to inspection frequency
- Relevant standards, codes of practice, and documentation requirements
- Safe working practices when dealing with damaged electrical equipment
- Throughout the programme, strong emphasis is placed on health and safety, correct working procedures, and the accurate completion of inspection and test records.
